Beaune Clos du Roi
1er Cru 2021
Grape Variety : Pinot Noir
Soil : Limestone with clay
Site : The vineyard of "Clos du Roi" is located below "Les Marconnets" on a fold in the hill. This old property of the Dukes of Burgundy was annexed by King Louis XI of France after the death of Charles the Bold. Chanson owns around 3 ha, i.e. 35% of the total climat appelation. 2/3 of the surface owned by Chanson are planted with Pinot Noir.
The Vintage 2021 : After a winter characterized by marked variations in temperature and a summer like weather spring, A sudden and intense frost fell upon Burgundy early April and severely hit the buds that had formed on the vine. The months that followed were a succesion of rainy and warm episodes. During summer there were warm and humid periods and the harvest started at Chanson on September 15, under a bright sunshine. The red wines have a good colour. They give off floral fragrances and a beautiful fruit expression but the volumes produced are quite low.
Tasting : Bright ruby colour. Intense aromas of ripe wild fruit (black-berries, wild strawberries...) mixed with spices. Well-balanced with a good energy. Tight and delicate texture. Well-crated tannins. Refined and well-integrated acidity. Long finish with fruity notes. Score : 16/20 Jancis Robinson
Food pairing : To be enjoyed with red meat grilled or en sauce and French cheeses (Epoisses, Citeaux or goat).
